It didn’t take long for Kyle Gabler’s Tower of Goo to become an oddball cult classic in the freeware scene. It was an innovative mini-game, it was oddly addictive, it was developed in less than seven days and word spread quickly. The aim of the game is to build a tower of goo (yes – you heard right) as high as humanly possible. This is achieved by clicking and dragging droplets of goo to create supports for the tower. Building an unstable structure will see your tower collapse in a pile of goo.

The graphics are simple, sharp and cartoonish – which is just perfect. The colours used are minimalistic, while the soundtrack churns out a quirky French sounding tune. These aspects just cement the whole ‘cult status’ aspect of the release. The soundtrack in particular enhances the pace of the game, although in reality you can play as quickly or as leisurely as you want.

The game itself is fun, although how long it will hold your attention for is dependant on how determined you to repeat the building process repeatedly and build a super high tower. You can take it seriously and try to beat your highest score (hell, take a snapshot if you take it THAT seriously) or you can just build a wonky tower and eventually watch it fall to the ground. Either method can be enjoyable but remember: this is a mini-game so it isn’t likely to hold your attention for days on end. However, you may well return to it on occasion.

If you like your games a little innovative, a little quirky, a little puzzley and a little arcadey, this one might just fit the ticket. It’s a pity it doesn’t have some sortof level-based structure to give it more length, depth and challenge but it was made within a seven day period and it’s a unique experience.
