You are a small ghost that can change colours. You can shoot blocks corresponding to the colour that you have changed to. Since the screen automatically scrolls right, you will need to do this to score points, make passageways and eventually move through different backgrounds.
Personally I felt that it took a bit too long to earn your rewards in this game. More frequent background changes would've sufficed, even though level numbers go up every 50,000 points regardless. Nonetheless the game has the 'oldschool arcade' feel. It just comes across as a tincy bit repetitive.
