I have to admit, I never got to play the original Metroid(s). I was always more of a Turrican fan, due to my ownership of an Amiga. Hearing so many people praise Metroid and compare it to Turrican (usually with Turrican listed as being second best) over the years always did raise my curiousity. Having played a couple of authentic fangames (according to sources) in recent times, it is easy to see the similarities - the large levels, the multi-directional shooting and the ability to morph into a ball and roll through small passages.
This particular fangame was solid and fun with well constructed levels, although the controls feel a little clunky at times.
