La-Mulana is an action /adventure that provides interesting puzzles to overcome, while providing intresting combat situations.
WARNING: La-Mulana is in Japanese - you will not be able to get far in the game without understanding Japanese or reading a walkthough (walkthoughs are in Japanese but you can use translation services to get a decent understanding).
Gameplay:
You start the game with a simple whip, lack many abilities such as saving the game and start with very little life. As you progress though dungeons you will receive weapons and abilities that allow you to reach other parts of the dungeons. The game is non-linear and there are many paths to reach the end. Expect to spend a large amount of time dying while you learn the mechanics of the game in the beginning. There are very few ways to regain life in the game but enemies do not do much damage. Instead, plan to go into the dungeon to achieve an objective and then return, save/reload to recover health and do it again. Early in the game you will recieve the ability to teleport to various way-points including the sole save location. Later in the game, you will have many powerups and the games' battle challenges will become quite a bit easier.
Graphics:
The game uses MSX style graphics - most enimes are single color (and transparent). Do not expect latest gen graphics. Instead expect retro graphics that would appeal to gamers that appreciate MSX generation games.
Sound:
There are 18 seperate dungeons, each with their own midi soundtrack. I like the soundtracks a lot!
Replay:
Expect to spend 20 hours beating the game, although once you got the game down, you should be about to play it in about 5 hours. Various routes provide different experences but the puzzles are already known. Don't expect to play and finish the game more than 3 times.
Overall:
If you can get over the language barrier, you can expect a fun game similar to the 2D Zelda or the GBA Castlevania games, without being as linear. If you have played Metroid Zero mission and found the various secret passages, you will find this game a familiar feel but with longer gameplay and more puzzles.
